The call for papers, posters and performances for the next Finland Futures Research Centre’s conference happening on the 12th and 13th of June 2017 in Turku is now open. The conference will be focusing on the guiding theme “Futures of a Complex World”. In order to meet this theme the organisers ask academics, researchers and professionals to present their work which preferably deals the following questions: What are the main challenges in an era of an uncertain world? How to create sustainable futures based on empathy? What is the role of futures research in identifying opportunities for action that are fair and resilient while remaining agile in a global and complex world?

Like in the past years, the conference program will consist of keynote lectures, concurrent sessions, participatory workshops, performances and social activities with the aim to generate critical, multidisciplinary and stimulating discussions and to promote networking between people from different backgrounds. The structure of the conference will be guided by following key topics:

  • Complexity and systems thinking
  • Resilient futures
  • Futures of education, learning and work
  • Futures of consumption and the economy
  • Futures of democracy, society and values
  • Technology foresight, an era of transformation, human and technology interaction
  • Challenges and opportunities for global governance
  • Methods and methodology of futures research

The 18th International Futures Conference of the Finland Futures Research Centre is organised in co-operation with the Finland Futures Academy, the National Foresight Network, Finland and the Foresight Europe Network, FEN. It is targeted to academics, authorities, policymakers and representatives from the governmental organisations and NGOs, students and all interested in futures research.

Adaptation Futures, the biennial conference of the Global Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA), will be held in Rotterdam from 10 to 13 May 2016. The fourth PROVIA worldwide adaptation conference highlights adaptation practices and solutions for people, governments and businesses, and aims to move climate change adaptation forward by promoting solutions across sectors, borders and communities. Scholars, practitioners, policymakers and business people from all around the world will meet and get the chance to exchange new and practical ideas, experiences and insights for climate change adaptation. Participants are invited to share their research findings, public and commercial solutions, and policy issues. They are asked to demonstrate how their findings might be applicable to other communities, countries or sectors.

Three types of sessions are offered: science sessions, practice sessions (including policy practice) and combined science-practice sessions. Proposals are invited for full sessions that fit one of the three categories, as well as abstracts for individual presentations in the science sessions. The organizers are particularly interested in combined science-practice sessions. Many companies and public authorities contribute to scientific research, or conduct research themselves. Science sessions are therefore open to those wishing to present scientific findings and solutions relevant to climate change adaptation. Businesses, practitioners, policymakers, designers, investors and decision makers can also interact with scientists to explore and discuss solutions to the adaptation challenge in practice sessions, or propose solution-oriented science-practice sessions.
